How Wendy Horton Can Help You

PRINT FRIENDLY

Wendy is a teacher-trained education specialist working at the CDN. If you consult with Wendy, she can assist with many of the key components of the MaP process. These include:

  1. Helping you put together your MaP Folder
  2. Helping you set up the team and put the MaP plan into action
  3. Helping you monitor progress
  4. Helping you with the management of your child's special needs.

Helping You Put Together Your MaP Folder

  1. Refining the key issues you want to work on.
  2. Helping you get a better undrestanding of what is happening for your child at school and how they are going. This could include a visit to your child's school to observe and meet with your child's teachers.
  3. Assistance in setting your goals.
  4. Helping you write the documents for your MaP Folder such as the Individual Summary.

Helping You Set Up Your Team and Put the Plan Into Action

Our experience so far is that this is where most parents struggle.

  • How can you best introduce your plan to the school, and set up the relationship so that you can best work together?
  • What is the best way to educate the teacher, the principal and others about your child's special needs?
  • How can you recruit the school to work towards your goals?
  • How do you integrate school goals (e.g. their IEP) with your own?

Wendy can help you with these processes. She can advise how best to communicate with the school. She can:

  • Introduce the MaP Folder process to the school
  • Attend meetings with you
  • Help bridge the gap between home and school.

Helping Monitor Progress

Probably the most enjoyable part of the process for us at the CDN is supporting children and families along the journey. Wendy is able to assist through meeting with you on a regular basis (e.g 2-4 times per year), and using these meetings to review progress, help you solve problems and maintain your enthusiasm.

It is useful to have somebody at the transition times (see Managing your MaP) such as moving from primary to high school, or changing schools. Wendy can help you look ahead and prepare for these important times in your child's development.

Helping You With Your Child.

Finally, Wendy can be of direct assistance with her work as an educator with experience in special needs. This could include:

  • Assistance with resources and assistive technology
  • Advice on educational strategy (for you at home)
  • Advice to teachers
  • Coming out to your home, helping set up study spaces and programs
  • Providing direct tutorial services for your child.

Appointments with Wendy can be made by calling the CDN.
