Even though I have a Doctorate in Education (Literacy and Learning Disabilities), my main passion is clinical work and teaching rather than academic. My real joy comes from sitting down with a child and a parent and leading them through the wonderful process of learning and discovery. Of course, for those with a diagnosed Learning Disability this process can be much more bitter then sweet. This is when the teacher, the clinician can make all the difference....... There she stands, a harbinger of hope in the hearts of her students,
An oracle; Promising each trusting face that, together, they'll search for and discover the answers. A resilient guide-around, under, over and through Every seemingly surmountable hurdle. There he stands a developer of dreams in the minds of his charges, There they stand, architects of endurance in the souls of the children, I may not always attain to the ideals of this poem but it does inspire me and helps define the reason I do what I do. I believe in and support the notion of multidisciplinary treatment for learning and developmental disorders. A highly collaborative and cooperative team, a single and well designed treatment plan with multiple participants and a common area of operations provides even the most challenged student with the greatest chance of success. My particular interest is in scientific-evidenced based literacy interventions which research shows can not only skill a person but can impact on the very constitutional reason for the disability. Learning Disabilities may not be curable in the 'neurological' sense but they can be effectively managed and Dyslexics and those with associated learning disabilities cannot only survive but thrive.
